William Spencer, 24, a man in custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, jumped from a building on the 300 block of the Boulevard of the Allies in downtown Pittsburgh. He died after being rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital on Monday, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner.

The Pittsburgh Institute for Nonprofit Journalism obtained a photograph that shows a broken window at the top floor of the Renewal detention center and the body of a man on the sidewalk. Renewal is located on the 300 block of Boulevard of the Allies.

A spokesperson for Renewal declined to comment whether Spencer was a resident of the facility and directed questions to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. “We cannot release any information regarding Mr. Spencer,” the spokesperson said.

Donald Murphy, public information officer for the BOP also declined to confirm if Spencer was housed at Renewal detention center when he jumped.

“….for privacy, safety, and security reasons, our office does not share specific information regarding the cause of death for any inmate, nor do we discuss information on any specific inmate or groups of inmate conditions of confinement to include medical information,” Murphy wrote in an email.
